There is something we will never fully comprehend – our mortality. No matter how hard we try to ignore it or outlive it death comes all too quickly. Okay, I realize this is sounding pretty depressing all of a sudden but in order to truly live we must admit how temporary this life really is. God has never been shy in reminding us of this truth. Scripture reminds us numerous times how short our life on this earth is.
“Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” (James 4:14)
“You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Everyone is but a breath, even those who seem secure.” (Psalm 39:5)
“Remember, O God, that my life is but a breath;” (Job 7:7)
Take a breath.
Now, think about your life and contemplate this: your life is like a breath. What will you do with that breath?
Life is a Hashtag
For anyone who might not know what a “hashtag” is let me get you caught up. Hastags are words or phrases without spaces that people post with a number sign (#) on social media like Twitter or Instagram. It’s often a phrase used to describe a life experience, object, or person. For instance: if I went to the beach with my best friend I might take a picture of us, post it, and add some hashtags like #beachwiththebesties, #funinthesun, #yolo. Why am I explaining hashtags and what does this have to do with my spiritual life? Good question, keep reading.
The New Normal
Most of us don’t feel our mortality daily. We are involved in countless activities and relationships that can make every day feel so full of life and opportunities. Today’s social media has made many people look at life in new ways. Everything we do can be shared digitally with millions of people around the world instantly. It seems like everything some people do becomes memorable; going to a concert, studying at school, eating, what people eat, where they eat, etc. Social media has also changed the way we view each other. Every hashtag attached to our experiences or opinions portrays something about us. I think that what we post on social media often defines what people think about us.
How would you describe your life right now? How would you hashtag it?
Like a great vacation that seems too short and is over before you know it – life goes by too fast. We only get one life and what we do with it will determine our legacy. Think of your life summed up in a few hashtags. Someday your life will be over and people will gather to say a few words about you. Your life will be summed up in brief explanations of what you did and how you impacted others around you. Maybe, thinking about how other’s would hashtag your life could change the way you live tomorrow.
Hashtags that are the same are grouped together and can be searched. For instance, the hashtag for a person’s name, a specific event, or a phrase like #yolo are all linked together. If you search for a specific hashtag a database will allow you to see all the other people and messages linked to that word or phrase. You can find out what other people said regarding the Grammys or what they think about Vampires. You can search for any hashtag word or phrase and find everyone who has used it. So, when this life is over what kind of hashtag would we need to search for to find you? #livedonlyformyself? #moneyruledmylife? #emptypleasure? #goddidntgetmybest? #ignoredJesus?
Or, will there be hahstags like #gaveitallformysavior, #jesuswasmyeverything, #livedbygrace, or #livedwitheternityinmind be attached to your name?
I hope that when my life is over and God searches for these phrases that my name will come up – #savedbygrace, #Hispowerperfectedinmyweakness, and #welldonegoodandfaithfulservant!
What kind of hashtag will be attached to your life?
